Stephens Witt

I began performing, then writing and recording music in around 1969.

In 1973 I opened a concert for Earl Scruggs and his sons along with my band at the time.  Earl said, “You boys sing real pretty.”

Through the ‘70s and part of the ‘80s I performed anywhere from a solo act mostly, as part of a duo, or a trio playing bluegrass, to a full rock band or country band.

By ‘85 it was apparent that I was going to have to get a real job to actually make a living.  As is commonly passed along among the great majority of musicians in the world, “Don’t quit your day job!”  In my case I had to go find one.  So I moved into that world until around 2010, and have been back to writing and recording music since then, and occasionally performing.

This all took place in various spots throughout the west.  From Utah and Idaho, to Wyoming, and then to Seattle for that ‘job’ thing.

Since moving to Fort Collins in 2017 I have been performing my own songs and covers occasionally for the Tale Spinner Lounge shows, along with being the regular accompanist for the storytellers in that show this past year.

And here we are!

My songs in recent years have been mostly personal in nature, from haunting recollections to current emotions.  From "Dirty Harry's Gun" to "Drunk Enough" to an actual "Body on the Beach".  Truth smattered with fiction and time-altered memories.  I try to keep my songs entertaining and distant from the sappy-sad folksinger approach, even though I call myself a folksinger most of the time.  Take a listen!
